I have shared this story with just about anyone who is willing to listen because it is so awe-inspiring to me and it's something I never thought I'd ever have the opportunity to do in my lifetime.
My best friend, Mike, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 18 years ago, and his kidneys began to fail 4 years ago. He's been on 3 day a week dialysis since then, and has been on the waiting list for a donor kidney.
I found this out in February of this year through my sister, and after her asking me if I would consider donating one of mine (she doesn't have the same blood type as he does and I do) , I spent a day of thinking about what all was involved, researched the Cleveland Clinic website, etc.
I told him I would and he thanked me so many times I have since lost count. Well I tested in March and was confirmed as a compatible match in April (April Fool's Day actually).
Since then, we have both gone through a series of tests to prepare for the long awaited and much needed surgery. Once we were both completely cleared, it was just a matter of waiting for the surgery date.
We just found out on 10/5 that we are scheduled for surgery on December 5. I really wanted to give him this gift on his birthday, but I guess Christmas isn't too bad of a day to celebrate getting a second chance at life either.
Thanks for listening and best wishes to everyone in whatever situation they may be,
All my best,
Michelle
