I have been on both sides of the nursing pendulum. I so enjoyed the 17+ years I spent as a bedside hematology/oncology nurse. As I developed my clinical skills, I learned that incorporation of compassion and support was most important in the care of my patients. To me there is no greater reward than knowing I have somehow made a devastating situation a little more bearable for a patient and/or family.
I am now the Nurse Manager of the Hematology/Oncology unit. I never would have thought that this is where my career would lead me, but it has been quite a rewarding experience. This team does remarkable work every day. I have refocused my attention from being a hem/onc nurse to developing the hem/onc nurse. I try, by example, to lead a team who is accountable, committed, and compassionate.
As I reflect on this “pendulum,” I try hard to recall that as a Nurse Manager, I must remember where I came from and the lessons learned along the way. I do not know how far the pendulum may swing, but I am ever grateful for each and every experience.
I wish to thank my staff for the opportunity to lead such a talented team. You have been patient and supportive as I continue to learn and develop as a leader. I am in constant amazement of your skill, compassion, advocacy, and resilience. I consistently hear from patients and families how much your care is appreciated. I am proud to say you define “excellence in nursing.” I hope for you, that you and those who follow in your footsteps, will feel the rewards between the swings of the pendulum. Your work leaves a legacy on the lives of those you serve.
