J C M Ball's Letter

To my nephew, Francis,

Dear Francis
I know how much you love wildlife, especially bugs. I know you are only 12, but it would be great to think that creatures like insects and spiders would thrive throughout your lifetime. However, it looks like that won't be the case and lack of invertebrates affects all other forms of wildlife. We need more pollinators, not less. There were far fewer butterflies in our garden this year than when you were here last year and put out the butterfly feeding station you made. We desperately need the governments of both our countries, and of every country, to take urgent action on climate change and loss of diversity. Meanwhile we are doing everything we can to make our garden a wildlife-friendly place and to live more sustainably.
Let's hope this will happen before the point of no return.
Lots of love
Auntie Jane
