Mark Kempsell's Letter

To my niece, Penelope,

How proud you've made me to be your Uncle! It has been an absolute joy to watch you grow up, especially given how poorly you were so early in your life. A true fighter just like your mummy and grandma (no, grandma wouldn’t have liked to be called that!)

To see how much you love nature and animals is something so special and I hope you get to continue to explore the wonder of the great outdoors, and our planet for many years to come.

Whilst I write this you are almost 2.5 years old! I hope that your future is a time where you can be proud of the actions our generation took. That we made meaningful moves to save our planet and turned the tide in the right direction before it was too late!

The world we all share is so diverse and full of wonder, and we have the capability to do this, but for too long greed has taken priority over preserving what we have. But believe me when I say there are many people fighting to save our home. They are the people I hope your future remembers.

To borrow a short part of a wonderful excerpt by the great Carl Sagan - Pale Blue Dot "It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

Whilst being one of my favourite pieces of writing, it also really highlights the critical role we have to protect our future and to do all we can to save our planet for future generations. This is our home and whilst I fear that we may lose it, I have far more hope that we can save it. I hope that you continue using your fighting spirit to continue that fight and teach future generations of our family the wonder that is our planet, and our home.

With all my Love,

Uncle Mark
